Garmin - Industrial Design Intern

We are seeking a full-time Product Designer Intern in our Olathe, KS location. In this role, you will be responsible for learning and applying fundamental usability and user centered design principles to guide software user interface development for various products with different specifications while working closely with user experience designers, software engineers, production artists, and product managers of the assigned project.

Essential Functions
-
Learn to research, design and prototype new user experiences for new features, create design mockups, wire framing, and capture interactivity and business logic (required for proper design implementation) with Garmin’s development methodology with guidance

Learn to produce creative, simple and highly usable solutions for how products interact in response to human behavior

Learn to work closely with user experience designers and production artists, software engineers and product managers of the assigned project in determining design directions

Learn to assist with new user interface testing and conduct usability tests to get feedbacks on new designs

Learn to collaborate with and communicate to teams in engineering and product managers to produce superior solutions

Learn to maintain and ensure user interface design and behavioral consistency across Garmin products
Basic Qualifications

Completed coursework in Interactive Design, Human Factors, or a degree with an equivalent curriculum that teaches user centered design principles

Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)

Demonstrated strong and effective verbal and written communication skills

Relevant experience and/or training related to user interface design and behavior

The successful Co-op candidate will work together as part of our team to develop skills through a learning process while assisting our team with a number small project and designated in-plant duties. Data collection, analyses and suggesting improvement, is a key function of this role. Specific work will be selected based on the candidate’s experiences and area of interest, as well as current project requirements within the site.

Qualifications
